Metro Icon History of Metropolitan Express

Metropolitan Express Transport Services is a privately owned local transport business. The company has been trading since 1986 and as its name suggests is dedicated to supplying local transport solutions. Over the years, the company has grown from a fleet of twelve vehicles in its first year, to now running in excess of 150 vehicles, ranging in size from small courier vans, to semi tautliners.

The company survived a 50/50 spilt in ownership and management in 1995. The change in ownership brought the present business management team together and with sound business acumen, the company has secured the future with a number of long-term contracts with several blue chip companies.

Metropolitan Express Transport Services has developed into four main operating divisions – Couriers, Taxi Truck, Construction and Warehousing. Each division has been identified as a future market and development stream for the business.

The warehousing division has expanded from a 10,000 sq ft facility in the early days, to in excess of 100,000 sq ft today. The facilities boast approximately 10,000 racking spaces and provide a complete logistics service.

Technology has also seen much transformation whereby job bookings were manually taken and transmitted to drivers via 2 way radios and today electronically managed and tracked via the PDA system and i-mate personal computers. The fleet controllers also have the added benefit of viewing their vehicles on screen, any time and in real time, this assists the operators in choosing the best vehicle for the job.

The future is secure and the company sees the main challenges ahead in the areas of safety, communication and the ability to develop long term partnerships with all its clients.
